Soaring among the albatross at Campbell Island
Our Birding Down Under adventure saw us arrive at Campbell Island! We awoke to golden, sun-bathed cliffs at North Cape, teeming with tens of thousands of endemic albatrosses, mainly the endemic Campbell Albatross, alongside good numbers of the handsome Grey-headed Albatross, a sensational spectacle to start the day!
Then, in true Subantarctic fashion, the clouds moved in, with wind gusting upwards of 50+ knots. This added to the immersion for those heading on ‘the long walk’, while many opted for the boardwalk or a morning Zodiac cruise. We returned to our trusty expedition vessel rich in experience. We saw it all. From meadows of megaherbs, nesting Southern Royal Albatrosses, and the endemic and flightless Auckland Island Teal.
