Exploring Hasselborough Bay on Macquarie Island

Adverse weather conditions hampered our usual landing spot at the isthmus of Macquarie Island. In the true nature of Expedition Cruising, Plan B was landing at Hasselborough Bay on the western side of the island. Exceptional manoeuvring by our Captain and outstanding work from the crew allowed for shore excursions to view the Gentoo Penguin colony near the base. However, the abundance of adorable weaner Southern Elephant Seals on the beach likely stole more hearts than the penguins!

The afternoon was spent at sea, heading towards our next island destination, Campbell Island. Seven albatross species, numerous prions, and other petrels made for thrilling sea birding alongside educational and entertaining talks.
