A magical day on Macquarie Island

What a day! Enjoying the calm weather, we cruised along the rarely visited western side of Macquarie Island, an area usually besieged by westerly winds.

Then it was a day ashore at Sandy Bay, amid one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on planet Earth—a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. We roamed amazed, amid countless thousands of Royal and King Penguins, plus fearless Skuas, wheeling Giant Petrels and, a crowd favourite, the adorable weaner Southern Elephant Seals.

Afterwards, it was a Zodiac cruise along the coast to see the Eastern Rockhopper Penguin colony. On the way, we had the incredible thrill of encountering Killer Whales that cruised past at lunchtime—a well Orca-started showing!
