Exploring the Wilds of Carnley Harbour

The Grafton

Overnight the weather had cleared giving us a beautiful sunrise over the hills and peaks that surround Carnley Harbour.

After breakfast our morning was dedicated to exploring the inner reaches of Carnley Harbour, our first stop was at Epigwaitt where the Grafton was wrecked in 1864 and with a low tide we were able to see the remains of the Grafton still visible on the beach as well as venturing into the forest to the where Francois Raynal and his men established their hut and furnace while castaway.

With all back aboard Spirit of Enderby, we sailed to the head of Carnley Harbour's North Arm where we enjoyed a Zodiac cruise under sunny skies as well a landing at the Erlangen clearing where we were able to find the stumps of rata trees cut by the crew of the German cargo ship Erlangen 81 years ago.

Our afternoon was spent in the eastern fiords where we hiked to Lake Hinemoa, watched Rockhopper Penguins live up to their names and marvelled at the beautiful coastal scenery.

After dinner we farewelled the Auckland Islands and, escorted by a magnitude of seabirds, set course to Campbell Island.
