Historical Hardwicke

Hardwicke Settlement cemetary

Anchoring overnight in the protected waters of Auckland Island's natural harbour Port Ross ensured a restful night for all with everyone waking refreshed and looking forward to the hearty breakfast prepared by our talented chefs.

Sufficiently fuelled for the morning, it was time to board the Zodiacs and head ashore at former agricultural and whaling community Hardwicke. A wander along the old main street brought us to the heart of the old settlement, with the outline of its former glory visible at times including the cemetery and boat ramp, where we gathered to consider just what life must have been like for those living here all those years ago.

This afternoon we made our way along the fiord indented eastern coast, before anchoring for the night in the shelter of Tagua Bay, Carnley Harbour.
