Enderby Island Wildlife Safari
The Auckland Islands hove into view shortly after dawn and we proceeded to make our way to the sheltered anchorage of Sandy Bay on Enderby Island. The first Zodiacs ashore were greeted by curious Auckland Island Teal before our attention was drawn to the action and excitement of life on Sandy Bay for the Hooker's/New Zealand Sea Lions.
Dividing into groups for the day, the majority of the party tackled the full circuit of the island finding their way through regenerating fields of flowering Stilbocarpa and around thickets of Hebe elliptica in search of the many wildlife wonders that call Enderby Island Home. Auckland Island Snipe were seen, Red-crowned Parakeets kept us company throughout the day, the occasional Sea Lion was spotted lounging in the strangest of places, Auckland Island Tomtits flitted about and Yellow-eyed Penguins/Hoiho cautiously crossed the sward to their nests deep in the forest.
The opportunity to observe the spectacle of gaming Southern Royal Albatross on the slopes above Sandy Bay rounded out another excellent day in New Zealand's Subantarctic Islands.
