Exploring Herald Island and Dragi Bay
We arrived at Herald Island early in the morning, however a change in wind direction picked up a sizable swell on the southern side of the island we had planned to visit.
Sailing around to a spot on the island's eastern side, Spirit of Enderby dropped anchor and we enjoyed a pre-breakfast Zodiac cruise. Visiting the bird rocks we were suitably impressed by their arches, cliffs and caves. Also with the prowess and agility of one determined Polar Bear we watched in awe climbing the rocks.
Back on board it was time for a welcome hot breakfast as we sailed toward Dragi Bay and our next adventure. North-westerly winds had moved ice into the bay, however our Captain's navigational skills saw us making a landing at the Karluk monument where we stretched our legs had a short walk around.
Exploring the shoreline in the Zodiacs we watched a Polar Bear makes its way down into the water while 5 Snow Goose chicks watched at the water's edge. With the fog starting to roll in, we headed for the bird cliffs - at 8 kilometres long they are the largest on the island. Navigating the ice proved tricky though worthwhile as we took in this spectacular towering expanse.
With the temperature dropping, it was time to head back on board where we relived the day's magic over a pre-dinner drink in the bar.
