Among the Albatross and Megaherbs of Campbell Island

Southern Royal Albatross_Campbell Island, L.Thorpe

Our Campbell Island adventure started with a Zodiac cruise for an up close view of the Campbell and Grey-headed Albatross breeding at Bull Rock - an astounding spectacle with thousands of albatross covering the slopes above, and filling the air all around us.

It is a marvel to think so many albatross are able to navigate the same air space without apparent incident. The Spirit of Enderby then sailed onwards to the protected waters of Perseverance Harbour where our Zodiacs ferried us ashore for an unforgettable afternoon with the Southern Royal Albatross and megaherbs of Campbell Island.

The next morning an intrepid party departed for the across island walk to North West Bay, while the rest of us explored Perseverance Harbour by Zodiac visiting the historic sites with lecturer and Campbell Island historian Norm Judd, spotting Campbell Island Teal in abundance along the shores of the harbour.

With the wind increasing in the afternoon, we returned once again to the realm of the Southern Royal Albatross, this time watching these masters of flight among the megaherbs at Col Lyall.

Following another delicious dinner from our talents chefs, we bid our farewells to Campbell Island and set sail for the Antipodes Islands.
