Waterfalls, Wildlife and Adventures in Fiordland
Daylight slowly arrived from behind the cloud veil as we made our way out of First Arm this morning. As we finished off our first delicious breakfast, we began our exploration of the islands at the mouth of Doubtful Sound. The Heritage Explorer took us slowly through Gut Marine Reserve, which lies between pest-free Secretary and Bauza Islands, and the history and conservation of the area was shared along with the view from the bridge. We then sailed out of Doubtful to gain a smooth run down to Breaksea Sound. Along the journey, several albatross species joined us including White-capped, Wandering, Southern Royal and Buller's, along with Cape Petrels and Sooty Shearwaters.
After turning into Breaksea and cruising passed Breaksea Island we entered Acheron Passage, which separates Resolution Island and the mainland. Those on deck enjoyed observing the diving Gannets as we headed for picturesque Wet Jacket Arm. Waterfalls galore flowed down the fiord sides providing great photo opportunities and the drizzle seemed to ease just in time for our walk up to Moose Lake. Following the Herrick Creek, we weaved our own route along to Moose Lake checking out the flora and fauna up close. Several friendly South Island Robin were dancing around and Bellbird song spread through the trees. Despite the name, none of the elusive moose were encountered.
