Cruising Thompson and Doubtful Sounds
This morning Heritage Explorer sailed from Nancy Sound bound for Thompson and Doubtful Sounds, just a short navigation in the Tasman Sea. Entering Thompson Sound with a following wind carrying us along, we marvelled at the sheer, rocky faces of Secretary Island and the challenges faced in ensuring the island remains predator free.
With the northwest breeze increasing we navigated passed Blanket Bay and through The Gut where Fiordland's first marine reserve was established. Along the shores of Secretary Island we were treated to sightings of Kaka and Kereru, as well as hearing parakeets calling from within the lush green canopy that camouflaged them.
Exploring the Shelter Islands from the sea, Pied Shags and Fiordland-crested Penguins were sighted before we headed to our anchorage to enjoy our delicious farewell dinner and celebrate the success of our incredible Northern Fiords Explorer expedition.
