Chasing Waterfalls in Caswell Sound

Atmospheric Fiordland

Last night's southerly left an icing sugar coating of snow on the mountain tops as Heritage Explorer sailed from Bligh Sound en route to Caswell Sound. Outside of the fiord a south-westerly swell rolled in from the Southern Ocean and the sun illuminated the coastal escarpment of Fiordland.

Sailing southward we passed a number of small bays and coves indenting the coast before our arrival at the entrance to Caswell Sound. Entering the fiord we left the ocean swells in our wake as we sailed across the smooth reflective waters of Caswell Sound towards our anchorage at its head.

After lunch our intrepid walkers headed into the moss-bound forest of Caswell Sound in search of Lake Sargent. A great walk was had but the lake proved illusive in the available time, while others set off by Zodiac to marvel at the many waterfalls of Caswell Sound including the spectacular Shirley Falls that flows in a spectacular series of tumbling cascades from Lake Shirley high above.
