Verdant Surrounds at Hokaido's Hakodate, Onuma Nature Park
This morning we sailed towards the sunny port of Hakodate, beginning the day spotting a pod of dolphins and an entertaining Welcome to Japan presentation from Thijs. Then it was time for an early lunch as Heritage Adventurer docked and we made our way to Onuma Nature Park.
The ride to Onuma Nature Park was through the city, then through farmland, and into the hills. The farm soil was black rich earth, no wonder this is such a productive area. Lake Onuma is large and dotted with many small islands- a perfect opportunity to boat cruise and get a feel for the area. The sun took over from a passing shower for our tour from island to island over a variety of arched bridges. The verdant flora was composed of leaves of every size and shape - and over 50,000 shades of green - glistening after the rain. Truly delightful.
Back to town for a ride to the top of the Goryokaku Tower overlooking the star-shaped citadel that is now Goryokaku Park. The views from the old fort and the modern city were spectacular. Then, on the way home, there was a stroll along the waterfront.
Captain's Welcome Cocktails and lively chatter at dinner wrapped up an excellent day.
