The True Expedition Experience at Rishiri Island

Both Expedition Leader Shirley and Captain Tomas had warned at the Captain's Farewell Cocktails that the weather was changing. They were right.

Heritage Adventurer anchored off the coast of the port of Rishiri Island. The sun came and went behind the clouds and the top of Mount Rishiri was hidden in those same clouds. The temperature and the winds were moderate and a decision was made to scout for the landing. The scout Zodiac returned with news of a dry landing but a "splashy" transfer through the choppy sea. Even with wet weather gear in place the ride was "splashy" enough to dampen clothes but not enthusiasm.

The short walk around Himenuma Pond gave us an opportunity to find many unique wildflowers in bloom before we arrived at our next stop to sample some of the local produce of the island. The wind had kept the fishing boats in port, but the BBQ scallops were delicious. Then came the call from the Bridge that the wind was building. Indeed, it was.

The return transfer to the ship was made in gusty, squally conditions. The team on the Bridge, the gangway and the Zodiac driver all showed their skill and experience, giving us an exhilarating expeditionary experience and the energy level was high at lunch.

The planned visit to Rebun Island was not possible, but the expedition team provided talks to educate and entertain. Moshe gave a talk with highlights of the Sea of Okhotsk then Linzy gave a personal account of his involvement with flower growing in Hokkaido plus an overview of the varied local agricultural production. As the sun set the ship passed close to the world's largest colony of Rhinoceros Auklets - with the crowd in the Observation Lounge able to see the cliffs and the multitudes of birds homeward bound.

As our voyage was nearing its end, we had a love slideshow presentation from Tina which received a rapturous response. Dinner was even louder than usual.
