Trekking the Scenic Surrounds of Dusky Sound

It was a another stunner of a day in Dusky Sound. The weather forecast was for rain, but the Atua were looking fondly on the explorers from the Heritage Adventurer.

The morning Zodiac ride through Facile Harbour introduced guests to New Zealand's beautiful Fiordland. Expedition staff were on hand to share the human and natural history of the area while the sun illuminated the beautiful surrounds.

Jellyfish and the playful resident Bottlenose Dolphins made an appearance and each guest enjoyed a walk at Pigeon Island where our historian John brought the scene to life set to the soundtrack native birds calling from the trees.

Later in the morning many guests chose to enjoy another Zodiac cruise, this time in Earshell Cove, and a short hike to a viewpoint overlooking the area. After a lovely lunch on board, a handful of enthusiastic walkers sighted a Tawaki/Fiordland Crested Penguin en route to their drop off point on Anchor Island. Once on land the team trekked 2.5 hours through luxurious bush, mud, and more mud. Meanwhile the rest of the team enjoyed a relaxing time on board.

Heritage Adventurer re-positioned around Anchor Island so everyone could enjoy a Zodiac cruise and stop in Luncheon Cove. Back on board there was just enough time for a lecture from Peter entitled 'New Zealand: Land of Birds', before recap and dinner. It was another action packed day as we settled in our cabins ahead of tomorrow's adventure.
