The adventure begins at The Snares Islands

Our In the Wake of Scott & Shackleton voyage was well and truly underway as we awoke to The Snares Islands ahead of Heritage Adventurer. This rocky outcrop was illuminated in glorious sunshine and a large variety of seabirds, including albatross and Sooty Shearwaters.

After a brilliant breakfast buffet, we were ready to take to the Zodiacs and see North East and Broughton Islands up close. We were delighted with low passes of soaring Buller’s Albatross and Snares Cape Petrel.

The Zodiacs and Kayaks explored the narrow passages of Boat Harbour. We marvelled at the large tree daisy Olearia lyallii, which dominates 80% of North East Island, where the sub-species of Snares Tomtit could be observed. We also witnessed New Zealand Sea Lions, New Zealand Fur Seals, and even a lone Southern Elephant Seal enjoying themselves in the sun along the shoreline. We had the exciting experience of navigating through a tunnel and venturing into some stunning caves whilst navigating along the coast.

The real highlight, however, was the endemic Snares Crested Penguin. These charismatic birds were observed wandering to and from their landing sites, including the spectacular ‘Penguin Slope ‘- a near vertical rock slope that penguins negotiate up and down. They were also seen on large rafts within the various bays, curiously approaching the Zodiacs whilst they preened in the water, enabling fantastic underwater footage.

Following a delicious lunch aboard, with many choosing to enjoy the last of the sun on the bistro’s outer deck, we were treated to a close pass of the Western Chain thanks to the skilful navigation of our Captain. Here, we could see more Buller’s Albatross and Snares Crested Penguins and new encounters with Salvin’s Albatross.

Afterwards, we made our way south along the seamounts towards Macquarie Island. We encountered Pilot Whales, Dusky Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins and many seabirds.
