Sunshine and Good Times on Enderby Island

Auckland Island Snipe, Enderby Island, R.Rudland

What a difference a day makes on the Southern Ocean - today we woke to brilliant sunshine with Spirit of Enderby anchored off Sandy Bay on Auckland Islands' Enderby Island.

A quick Zodiac ride over the glassy ocean and expeditioners were walking through fields of megaherb Bulbinella rossi in full bloom, flame-tipped rata forests and along the boardwalk spotting Auckland Island Teal, Shag and Tomtit, Light Mantle Sooty Albatross and more than 15 viewings of the elusive Auckland Island Snipe among our birding, short walker and long walker groups.

The New Zealand Bird of Year the Yellow-eyed Penguin/Hoiho also made numerous appearances marching to and from the beach, while the endlessly fascinating of Hooker's/New Zealand Sea Lion politics played out on Sandy Bay.

Our day on Enderby Island came to an end with a pre-dinner Zodiac cruise along the towering cliffs and Auckland Island Shag colony.
