Southern Ocean Initiation
Expeditioners on our ‘Birding Down Under' voyage were quickly acquainted with the power of the Southern Ocean as strong winds and a swell added a roll to the start of our journey.
While this meant a Zodiac cruise of The Snares was off the cards, all was not lost. Arriving at first light we watched thousands of Sooty Shearwaters decamp the island and head out to sea in order to feed hungry chicks and enjoyed close encounters with Snares Crested Penguins as they porpoised and rafted around Spirit of Enderby. Captain Dmitry was able guide us close enough to check out the penguin colony and crowd favourite ‘Penguin Slide' before setting sail for the Auckland Islands and, hopefully, better weather.
