Sunshine and Adventures Start Southern Fiordland Voyage

Spit Beach, Fiordland, Aaron Russ

It was an early start under grey skies in Te Anau this morning as the final preparations for our Southern Fiords Discovery Fiordland exploration were completed and our expeditioners gathered.

Flying out of Te Anau our helicopter pilots wound their way through the mountains beneath the cloud. Emerging into brilliant sunshine as we crossed the Main Divide the full glory of Fiordland sprawled below us including teasers of Dusky and Chalky Sounds before we touched down across Lake Widgeon to find our handsome expedition yacht Heritage Explorer waiting for us.

With all aboard we set sail along a sunlit Long Sound while enjoying lunch and doing our final briefings and introductions. With the weather on our side, and time on our hands, exploration was the name of the game this afternoon.

Heading for Spit Island, a tropical scene of white sand and blue seas greeted us and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent exploring this beautiful corner of Fiordland.
