Sunshine and Adventure in Banks Peninsula and Christchurch
Heritage Adventurer arrived in Christchurch's iconic port town and former volcano known as Lyttelton lit by a glorious sunrise. After breakfast we ferried ashore by Zodiac to explore Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula. First stop was the Ohinetahi house & garden in Governor's Bay, which set contemporary sculptures in a spectacular garden setting.
From Ohinetahi we headed south over the hill to lunch at The Bicycle Thief, where we also enjoyed tasting six of Rossendale Wines' award winners while winemakers Brent and Shirley provided fascinating insights on the New Zealand wine industry.
Then it was on to explore the city, rising phoenix-like from the ashes of the devastating 2011 earthquakes, or join John on a tour of the Antarctic Heritage Route. At 1500 hours we met up and travelled back to Lyttleton via the tunnel - quite the feat of engineering given it is more than 50 years old.
A short Zodiac cruise of the Lyttelton Harbour and we were back on board Heritage Adventurer and setting sail for Marlborough Sounds.
