(Stewart) Island Life

Guest with Weka on Ulva Island

Waking to a cloudy morning off Stewart Island, the skies cleared by the time Heritage Adventurer's guests headed ashore to explore predator-free sanctuary Ulva Island. On shore, the knowledgeable team from Ulva's Guided Walks were ready to lead long, medium and short hikes around the island.

Upon arrival an inquisitive Weka emerged from the bush to greet the new arrivals as Bellbird song rang through the air and Kaka soared high in the canopy. The trails meandered through beautiful native bush while our guides spotted birds, named trees and provided excellent interpretation during the morning's excursion.

After lunch back on board, many guests disembarked in Kaipipi Bay to enjoy a long walk through tree fern forest en route to Oban, while some guests disembarked in Golden Bay, rounding over a little hill to arrive in the town eager to explore the museum, shops, café and world famous South Sea Hotel - with all enjoying a fabulous sunny Oban afternoon.

Returning to our trusty expedition vessel, Steve gave an informative and useful presentation regarding photography composition before recap reliving a wonderful day of Stewart Island wilderness and culture, and an exquisite dinner.
