The Spirit of Okinawa

Upon Heritage Adventurer's arrival at Naha Port in Okinawa, we set off for Shurijo Castle. This historic castle, built in the late 1300s, served as the residence and administrative centre of the Ryukyu kings until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. Despite being destroyed multiple times by wars and fires, including during World War II in 1945 and a fire in 2019, the castle is being reconstructed, with plans to restore the main hall by 2026. We entered through the Shureimon Gate and strolled through the tranquil gardens before continuing our journey to the Valley of Gangala.

At the valley, we explored an ancient limestone cave and the surrounding subtropical forest. Excavations in the area suggest human habitation dating back 20,000 years. The Ikiga Cave ('man' in Okinawan dialect) known as a place to celebrate new life and pray for the well-being of children, transported us back to prehistoric times. As we ascended to the gallery area, we were captivated by the sight of a mature banyan tree's roots extending from the top of the cliff to the valley floor. The tree is estimated to be over 150 years old. In Okinawa, the banyan tree is considered sacred and believed to host spirits.

Some of our group visited the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, learning about the fierce defence of Naha City during World War II. Others explored Makishi Public Market, known as "Okinawa's Kitchen." The market offered a sensory explosion of Okinawan food, from various meats and seafood to unique vegetables and tropical fruits. Interacting with the friendly locals allowed us to experience the spirit of Okinawa, known as ''ichariba chode,'' where once we meet we are like family.
