Still Standing: Uwajima Castle & Yuzumizugaura Terraced Fields

Heritage Adventurer arrived at the Port of Uwajima under an overcast sky and enjoyed the cooler temperature of 24°C. Our first stop was Doi Pearl farm, a renowned company with a 65-year history in the region. We learned about the intricate process of implanting pearl seeds, harvesting the exquisite jewels, and some of us indulged in a bit of retail therapy. Uwajima, being a coastal port, has emerged as a major centre for pearl cultivation and fish farming in Japan.

Our coach then took us to the Uwa Sea peninsula where we visited the Yuzumizugaura Terraced Fields. This unique farming practice, still employed by the local community, involves stacked stone terraces that create a visually striking landscape. The fields yield a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables, particularly potatoes, which we had the pleasure of tasting. To top it off, we were treated to a special local beverage called shochu.

After a satisfying lunch, we made our way to Uwajima Castle, situated on a hill in the heart of the town. This castle, one of the 12 original castles that survived the Edo Period, was initially constructed as a defensive stronghold during the Samurai Era.

Wrapping up our time in Uwajima we ventured to the nearby Tensha-en Gardens. These gardens, framed by Mount Onigajo and the encompassing mountain range, were originally built as a retirement retreat for Munetada Date, the seventh feudal lord of the Uwajima domain and are a good demonstration of using 'borrowed scenery' to enhance a garden's features. One of the garden's highlights was the abundance of bamboo varieties encircling the ponds, symbolising the 'sparrow and bamboo' crest of the Date clan.

As we bid farewell to our gracious hosts at the port, the air was filled with the melodious sound of flutes, taiko drums, and the collective excitement of our next adventure.
