Yakushima's Mighty Mt. Miyanoura
Today's adventure took us to Yakushima, a sub-tropical island and Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage site (1993). Despite the misty and drizzly start, with an expected temperature of 23°C and high humidity of 90%, our excitement remained undeterred as we ascended into the granite mountains, reaching heights of up to 1,000 metres. The towering presence of Mt. Miyanoura, Kyushu's highest mountain, elevated the island's nickname to 'the Alps on the Ocean.' Divided into two groups, some of us embarked on a shorter hike guided by our knowledgeable local guide Steve, followed by a visit to the Yakusugi Museum. Meanwhile, the more agile members ventured on a longer hike, while others enjoyed leisure time to explore at their own pace. The anticipation was palpable in the lead up to being dwarfed by the towering majesty of the island's legendary Yakusugi trees, some 1,000 years old up to 5,000 years old!
After returning to Heritage Adventurer for a satisfying lunch, we ventured back to the mountains to explore the enchanting Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine. This moss-covered forest, adorned with colossal granite boulders, extended far and wide and served as the backdrop for the renowned animated film Princess Mononoke-- a Studio Ghibli production. As the day progressed the weather improved, and the brilliant sunshine filtered through the canopy casting a magical glow on the forest leaves.
Our farewell from Yakushima was accompanied by a delightful performance by a talented youth brass band. The harmonious melodies echoed through the air, bidding us sayonara and leaving us with a lasting memory of this remarkable island.
