Snorkelling the pristine Ashmore Reef

Conditions were perfect at Ashmore Reef this morning; the sea's surface was like glass and not a cloud in the sky. Those who didn’t sign up for snorkelling headed out on a Zodiac cruise to West Island, this is a significant breeding area for Boobies, Frigatebirds, Red- and White-tailed Tropicbirds, Common Noddies and Bridled Terns. West Island is an important nesting beach for Green Turtles, with plenty spotted in the water as well.

The Ashmore Reef sanctuary area is a remote and special place for wildlife. It was like stepping into an underwater world as the snorkellers immersed themselves in the reef’s beautiful condition, with plenty of healthy coral and colourful fish, incredible water clarity, and the water temperature was divine. Everyone was buzzing after an incredible morning out on and in the water.

Back on board Heritage Adventurer, we enjoyed a leisurely afternoon at sea, relaxing on board or enjoying lectures.
