Raucous Snares Crested Penguins at the Snares Islands
Our Galapagos of the Southern Ocean adventure was underway as we arrived at the Snares Islands. With the conditions unsuitable for Zodiac cruising, Captain Jacek took Heritage Adventurer for a fantastic ship cruise to an area of the Snares Islands known as the penguin slide. Hundreds of raucous Snares Crested Penguins surfed in, launching themselves ashore amongst the bull kelp before marching up the steep slope to their nests.
Afterwards, we sailed alongside the Western Chain, accompanied by countless Salvin’s Albatross, Sooty Shearwaters and small and large petrels, revelling in the strong winds.
