Port Ross History Lesson
A pre-breakfast landing allowed us to explore the remnants of former Auckland Island community Hardwicke. It's hard to understand how a settlement of up to 300 people was established here in 1850, however the harsh conditions and failed crops saw the community abandoned in less than 3 years.
After breakfast Spirit of Enderby was anchored out of the wind allowing a second landing, this time to explore the World War II Coastwatchers accommodation and lookout huts with their grand views of Port Ross, Enderby and Auckland Islands.
Once back on board it was time to set our course north for The Snares, our final Subantarctic destination.
