Magical Day on Stewart Island
A spectacular sunrise greeted all aboard Spirit of Enderby as guests woke in Paterson Inlet well rested after a calm night's sailing.
Following a hearty breakfast from our amazing chefs, it was time to pile in the Zodiacs and buzz over the glassy water to pest free sanctuary Ulva Island to explore this unspoiled rainforest with local guide Ulva Goodwillie and her team. It's amazing to see the native birdlife flourishing here and to learn the history of the island, with many guests thrilled by encounters with Kaka, South Island Rifleman, Tomtit, Tui and rare endemics South Island Saddleback and Yellowhead.
After a delicious lunch aboard and a short shift of anchor it was time to explore New Zealand's third island - the incredible Stewart Island. Free time here was spent exploring the quirky town centre of Oban in Halfmoon Bay, walking some of the scenic trails, indulging in a little retail therapy and enjoying the local hospitality at the historic South Sea Hotel.
Back on board and freshened up, we raised a glass in the bar in a pre-dinner celebration of our first expedition day.
