A White Christmas in East Antarctica

Navigating Ice Floes, East Antarctica, A.Breniere

Icebergs and pack ice are the best setting for those who have long been dreaming of a White Christmas. We have spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day cruising among the ice floes and icebergs, but the pack remains too dense for us to penetrate beyond 66° South.

However, we are sailing in the most beautiful Antarctic settings imaginable as the numerous icebergs around Akademik Shokalskiy change colours with the light. Circumnavigating one of these giant ice islands, we were able to see its ice layer structure, caves and crevasse as well as excellent wildlife sightings of Emperor and Adelie Penguins, three Antarctic seal species including elusive Ross Seal as well as numerous seabirds soaring around the vessel.

We started our festive activities on December 24 with a very enjoyable penguin party in the bar with various quizzes and competitions while our talented chefs have treated us to excellent, festive meals as we look to cross the remaining 60 miles that separates us from terra firma.
