Steaming South to East Antarctica with Humpback Whales

Humpback Whale, East Antarctica, C.Todd

After leaving Macquarie Island on December 20 we faced three days steaming south down to East Antarctica aboard our trusty vessel Akademik Shokalskiy. Fortunately the Southern Ocean did not show us its full force and by noon today the waves started to abate, indicating our approach to the edge of ice.

As we continued to make our way south we were lucky to come across a large pod of Humpback Whales feeding in the Antarctic waters. Slowing down we enjoyed the spectacular sight of whale blows and flukes all around the ship, with one of the animals passing right in front of the bow, giving us a chance to see its silhouette underwater during this magical encounter.
