Adventures in Australia's Icy Outback
Akademik Shokalskiy pulled up at Australia's icy outback and only Subantarctic Island Macquarie Island around noon under a patchy sky. After picking up a team of rangers led by Chris Howard, we headed to Sandy Bay eager to stretch our legs on this renowned wildlife hotspot having spent the previous day at sea.
Exploring the flurry of activity that is the Royal and King Penguin colonies, we also enjoyed watching Macquarie Island's other famous inhabitants - the Sea Elephants, including the curious young ‘weaners' lounging about the beach.
Obligingly, the sky cleared from time to time during the day allowing for some great photos on this magical island.
