Visiting 'Macca' Station
Repositioning Spirit of Enderby north to Buckles Bay overnight we woke to challenging weather conditions anchored off the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) Station on Macquarie Island.
Despite the weather not playing ball, we managed to get our Zodiacs ashore and were immediately greeted by several inquisitive King Penguins. Splitting into groups we explored the isthmus with our ranger guides quizzing them about life on 'Macca' as we came across numerous penguins including Gentoo, Northern and Southern Petrel, Brown Skua, Macquarie Island Shags and Southern Elephant Seals and weaners.
Meeting back at the station we shared stories with the rangers over cups of hot coffee/tea and some of the most delicious scones. However, with the wind increasing it was time to make a hasty retreat back to Spirit of Enderby for a welcome hot shower and lunch.
