Thousands of Sooty Shearwaters Rafting in Carnley Harbour
Having enjoyed the gentle overnight roll from the protection of Port Ross, Akademik Shokalskiy sailed into the larger ocean after breakfast. Faced with strong westerly winds and a swell we steamed by Musgrave Inlet and its twin caves as we pushed on to Carnley Harbour.
Hidden by fog, Carnley Harbour's entrance slowly revealed itself on our approach. Entering the harbour we were met with 40-knot winds howling around the ship, streaming over the harbour's surface and displacing waterfalls mid-stream which all made for spectacular viewing from the bridge, where most of our expeditioners had joined us.
The wild weather had not deterred thousands of Sooty Shearwaters either, which rafted around us and circled the ship en mass in an impressive display of choreographed unison among which Gibson's Wander Albatross and Light-mantled Sooty Albatross were also spotted riding the wind and a lone Hooker's Sea Lion was observed loping alongside our bow.
