The wildlife mecca of Sandy Bay, Macquarie Island
Our second day on Macquarie Island saw us arrive at Sandy Bay, the wildlife mecca on the east coast of Macquarie Island. It was a feast for the senses as we were surrounded by Elephant Seal pups, Royal Penguins to-ing and fro-ing, and King Penguins, many of which were undergoing their annual moult. Not all the Royal Penguins were squeaky clean; some were plastered with peat bog mud where they had slid on their way from the colony.
After this sensational experience, we returned to Heritage Adventurer, grateful to have experienced this wondrous highlight of nature.
