Southern Royal Albatross soaring overhead at Campbell Island
Arriving at Campbell Island today was one of many options: a mountain hike, an all-day circuit hike, Zodiac cruising or exploring the boardwalk at Col Lyall. Conditions were sublime, with Perseverance Harbour mirror calm. The New Zealand Sea Lion colony was abuzz with testosterone-fuelled Sea Lions busy with their harem of females, two-week-old pups bleating for the next meal and Sea Lions dashing through the water and popping up through the bull kelp.
On the boardwalk at Col Lyall, Southern Royal Albatross wheeled overhead, and among the tussocks, the teenage albatross were busy socializing or ‘gamming’. We marvelled at large megaherbs and minute orchids, listened to the songs of Pipits, and admired the flightless Campbell Island Teal dabbling among the shallows. To top off an incredible day, some enjoyed stunning observations of the Campbell Island Snipe.
