Soaking in the expansive views of the Possession Islands
The morning was spent sailing towards the Possession Islands. Despite a rolling swell, we had fantastic views of the Victoria Land coast when not benefitting from the fabulous onboard educational and entertaining presentations.
Upon arrival to the Possession Islands, it was clear a thick band of fast-moving ice would make a landing at either of the main islands impossible. Two competing swells also inhibited our plans for a Zodiac cruise. However, we were graced with a spectacular ship cruise of the archipelago thanks to our Captain. Our historian, John, shared key points, including the first landing from Sir James Clark Ross in 1841, claiming the region on behalf of Britain. He also reminded us of the connection between these islands and Borchgrevink, which neatly tied together with our very first excursion in Antarctica at Cape Adare. The scale and expanse of the Adélie Penguin colonies were extensive, occupying all the flat land available. The island's volcanic geology was equally impressive, with immense sea stacks and arches.
We pushed onwards with hopes to explore deeper into Robertson Bay. However, during arrival at dinner time it became apparent that, despite the most recent satellite imagery, the bay remained impenetrable to us. Our next destination is north at the Balleny Islands.
