Reliving early Antarctic expeditions – And a visit to Foyn Island

Heritage Adventurer cruised northwards along the western edge of the Ross Sea through the morning. Sailing alongside stunning Antarctic views, we enjoyed lectures on the Antarctic Treaty and the race to the South Pole. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to relive early Antarctic expeditions and try on the manhauling equipment used to haul sleds, and sample Hoosh (made from Pemmican, biscuits and water), an important energy and heat source for the journeys.

In the evening, we arrived at Possession Island and Zodiac cruised to the remote and rarely visited Foyn Island (named after the inventor of the exploding harpoon gun), home to a colony of about 30,000 Adélie Penguins.

While exploring the volcanic landscape, Weddell Seals, Adélie Penguins and Skuas watched us as it gently snowed.
