In the footsteps of Scott – Exploring Discovery Hut
It was another early start on our In the Wake of Scott & Shackleton voyage as we launched Zodiacs, but this time at Hut Point to visit Scott’s slightly older Northern Expedition hut, Discovery Hut. Unlike Cape Evans, this hut featured a porch to provide shelter from the Antarctic conditions. The stiff breeze blowing directly from over the Ross Ice Shelf to the south still made it a fairly cold place to contemplate the day, and the mummified seal near the doorway seemed to agree.
Back on board the comforts of Heritage Adventurer, a cruise in McMurdo Sound revealed pods of Orca/Killer Whales swimming in the frigid ocean and Emperor Penguins lounging on ice floes. These captivating wildlife encounters were all against a stunning backdrop of the Transantarctic Mountains on one side and Mount Erebus gently steaming away to the other.
Another fantastic day exploring the heart of Antarctica, the Ross Sea.
