At One with Nature on Campbell Island
Waking anchored at Perseverance Harbour, Campbell Island welcomed those on board Spirit of Enderby with some of its famous Subantarctic weather - light drizzle, strong winds and heavy clouds. However none of this stopped us from enjoying our first day on this special island.
Once ashore, expeditioners split into two groups: the more adventurous long walkers tackling the full day hike across windswept hills and through meadows of megaherbs as they made their way to Northwest Bay, while the rest enjoyed a morning Zodiac cruising the shores of this large, natural harbour.
The afternoon for both groups was spent in awe observing some of the world's largest flying birds - the Southern Royal Albatross. Following a short boardwalk, our morning Zodiac cruisers arrived at the Col Lyall nesting site and colony and spent a fascinating afternoon with these majestic birds while our long walkers enjoyed observing the antics of nesting couples and younger birds gamming as others soared overhead on their mighty wingspans creating much discussion in the bar this evening.
