Observing Chinstrap Penguins at the Balleny Islands

In the early morning, we enjoyed a stunning ship cruise of Sturge Island, the southernmost of the Balleny Islands. This was our first view of this remote and seldom-visited archipelago.

By the end of another delicious breakfast, we were approaching the central islands of Buckle, Sabrina Islands and Chinstrap Islet, the targets of our Zodiac cruise. Despite a confused sea with two competing swell directions, we were able to head out on a true Antarctic Zodiac adventure thanks to the fabulous work of the gangway staff.

Travelling the coastline of Sabrina Island and Chinstrap Islet was well worth braving the elements. We witnessed around 200 pairs of Chinstrap Penguins, which reside on these remote weather-battered islands. It was a great addition to the species list and an amazing experience, as this was the only opportunity to see them throughout the voyage.
The Kayakers headed on an epic adventure, seeming tiny compared to the massive cliffs above. They undertook an hour-long adventure, cruising the coastline, weaving with the icebergs and soaking in all the magic of the Balleny Islands. We enjoyed the monochromatic scenery and the elements, reminding us we were still in Antarctica. The enormous glaciers and huge icicles added to the dramatic environment, which we continued to soak in with a ship's cruise along the remainder of the island group. We enjoyed spotting many Humpback Whales and various iceberg forms before setting course for Campbell Island.

The afternoon was enjoyed on deck and in the comfort of the lounge with the Antarctic Heritage Trust auction. Rare items found a new home, all supporting the conservation of the historic huts we had visited. The announcements for a night at the theatre caused a stir amongst the guests and expedition team with a queue throughout the corridor, reception area and stairwell, everyone joined for a night at ‘Royal Terror Theatre’ with the production of ‘Ticket of Leave’. With lots of laughs, lost lines and fun all around it was an entertaining evening with an excellent turnout.
