Native birds on Ulva Island and through the streets of Oban

Our trusty expedition vessel, Heritage Adventurer, continued south to Stewart Island where we were greeted with clearing weather as we landed on nearby predator-free Ulva Island. After our guides from Ulva's Guided Walks welcomed us ashore, we and began our journey around the island.

With the dampness settled, Ulva Island smelt amazing with earthy tones immersing us in the untouched New Zealand wilderness. The walk didn't disappoint either as plenty of local endemic orchids were spotted, including the Spider and Greenhood, along with plentiful birdlife including Stewart Island Robin, Stewart Island Weka, South Island Kaka, Kereru (wood pigeon), Mohua (yellowhead), Red-crowned Parakeet, Fantail, Bellbird and Tui.

Once our trek around the island was complete, we returned to the comforts of Heritage Adventurer for lunch. After a delicious lunch it was over to Stewart Island with options to walk from Golden Bay to the town centre of Oban or be dropped off directly there to explore the quirky shops, museum and enjoy a drink at the world famous South Sea Hotel.
