Matsue the 'Town of Water'

Guests on board Heritage Adventurer's maiden Japan voyage enjoyed another day of adventure as we sailed into the Sakaiminato region, commencing our exploration of Matsue the 'Town of Water'.

The tower of Matsue Castle, once a fortress constructed by the first daimyo/lord of the Matsue domain Horio Yoshiharu, exists as one of few structures to still remain after the Haijo Edict- an ordinance passed in 1873 for the deconstruction of castles in Japan. Here we saw how the well kept structure has stood the test of time thanks to the community dedicated to its care.

We then took a boat ride along the Horikawa River encircling the town of Matsue for a quintessential touring experience on top of scenic views. We were particularly enthused by the numerous turtles along the bank providing endless entertainment.

In the afternoon we witnessed the flourishing peonies at Yuushien Garden, alongside the meticulously and deliberately crafted gardens at the Adachi Museum of Art. Founded by local businessman Adachi Zenko, the museum combines Japanese art and garden design for stunning tour experience in the open air.

Soon it was time to return to the comforting surrounds of Heritage Adventurer where our lecturer and guide Glenda gave an informative lecture of Akiyoshido Cave before another excellent dinner and incredible day exploring Japan.
