The Legend of Lusitania Bay, Macquarie Island
Early morning sunshine and easy landings at Buckle's Bay made for a magnificent second day on Macquarie Island.
The day started off with a walk up Razorback Ridge, providing an excellent vantage point to observe the sheltered eastern and rugged western beaches featuring loafing Elephant Seals, a Subantarctic Fur Seal and the first Gentoo Penguin amongs the King Penguins.
We continued our tour of the island passing Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) station, a historic research base used by Australian scientists studying the Antarctic region, and spotted a small colony of Rockhopper Penguins further along.
Elation flew sky high during our Zodiac cruise of Lusitania Bay as we observed the penguin motherload of 200,000 strong King Penguins triumphantly dwarfing the rusting digesters which remain as a reminder of the island's gruesome past.
After an eventful day we made our way back to Heritage Adventurer, spotting Orca and albatross along the way, as we left Macquarie Island to continue our voyage further south
