A Cavalcade of Wildlife at Macquarie Island
Our southernmost landfall before reachinhg the Ross Sea, 600 kilometres southwest of the Auckland Islands rests Macquarie Island, and what is set to be our first of two days in this memorable haven of wildlife encounters.
In ideal conditions, expeditioners went ashore by Zodiac in groups each having two sessions of two hours ashore followed by lunch on board Heritage Adventurer. The prime spectacles were the respective rookeries of the Royal Penguins nestled in the green and lush coastal slopes above the beach (with easy boardwalk access) and of the King Penguins on the beach, a few hundred metres from our landing spot. The sight and sound of these wonderful creatures will be a lasting memory for all of us, with Elephants Seals, Giant Petrels and Skuas the other principle players in the cavalcade of wildlife observed.
After an afternoon Zodiac cruise option, with a focus on water photography, was taken up by several Zodiac-loads of guests, we returned to the comforting surrounds of Heritage Adventurer as she remained anchored overnight in the sheltered waters of Sandy Bay.
