Into the Fold: A Day of Japanese Arts and Crafts at Sea

You might think that with a day at sea aboard Heritage Adventurer we would finally have an opportunity to sort the photos, update the journal, or even have a snooze but the expedition team had other ideas. We were treated to a variety of opportunities for education and entertainment. All optional, but also all tempting.

First up was Moshe describing the vegetation zones of the earth and their locations within Japan. Up next was a hands-on session of Origami with Phil and Sarah as we gathered in the Observation Lounge. Linzy tempted our palates with his description of the history of miso paste, the different types, and how it is used - a perfect lead-in to lunch.

Following a leisurely break, Sarah whet our appetites for wildlife viewing to come with her presentation on the whales and dolphins (cetaceans) of these waters. Michael made sure that we would be ready when the blows were spotted with his tips on wildlife photography. A second hands-on try at Japanese arts was available when paper, ink, pens and brushes were supplied to test our calligraphy skills with Sarah to guide us. A full day exploring many aspects of this culture wrapped up with Tina's talk on the elements and symbolism of a Japanese garden.

All the while, the sea rolled by smoothly and the temperature was perfect for a stroll around the upper decks. Recap was a potpourri of Confucius, ducks seed germination and sake. Dinner was superb as always. Tomorrow awaits.
