Traversing the Timeless Limestone Caves of Akiyoshidai Plateau
This morning Heritage Adventurer arrived at Hagi for our excursion to the Akiyoshidai Plateau and Akiyoshido Cave System. Most of us had experienced limestone caves before, but in every case our expectations were exceeded. The well-lit and easily traversed pathway through the cave led past a number of remarkable formations made by the dripping water. The information stations in English helped us to enjoy and understand what we saw. The powerful rushing river echoing loudly spoke its own message about the cave's formation. The riverside terraces and the re-emergence back into the forest were real highlights.
Almost all of us opted to remain ashore over lunch and so we were taken to the local fish market. There we had a choice of restaurants and could browse the market to see the catch of the day. It was excellent meals all around and we relished the chance to see a bit of local life.
Next was a visit to the Kikuya Residence - the well-preserved home of an Edo Period merchant family. All of the rooms and possessions in the house gave an immersive insight of life in the 1700s - but the consensus was that the gardens were the real highlight.
Onward to the Hagi Pottery Museum featuring Hagi-style pottery dating back to the 1600s and is justifiably famous throughout the country. We admired the display of historic and more recent creations, and were able to see potters at the wheel making the delicate forms that will be glazed and fired soon. It was an opportunity for souvenir and gift shopping that many were unable to resist.
Back on board, we cleared customs out of Japan and were given an overview of Japanese history by John followed by a quick review of Japanese pottery by Phil. The day was completed with the usual superb meal and a well-earned sleep.
