Exploring the tranquil Ulva and Stewart Island
Our Unseen Fiordland, Stewart Island & the Snares voyage was off to an incredible start as we spent the morning exploring the primordial beauty of Ulva Island. We chose how to spend our time on Ulva Island, with short, medium and long walks available. Immersed in ancient forest, we observed and heard Saddleback, Bellbirds, South Island Robin, Kākā, Red-crowned Parakeets, Fantails and more. Some of the early long-walkers were fortunate to observe a Southern Brown Kiwi/Tokoeka. Nestled in the bush, we watched in awe as the Kiwi swiftly moved through the undergrowth in search of food. Hidden by roots and foliage, it was difficult to photograph, but a special moment for all as we observed the New Zealand national bird in its natural habitat.
Our journey around Ulva Island saw us arrive at Sydney Cove, home to some snoozing Sea Lions. Making sure to avoid these sleeping giants, we returned to our landing area near Flagstaff Point for a Zodiac cruise back to Heritage Adventurer for lunch.
It was then back in the Zodiacs to explore Stewart Island. Landing at Kaipipi Bay we had multiple choices on how to make the most of our time here. Some chose a two-hour hike into Oban along North West Circuit track. Others took a short walk over the hill, stopping at the recently refurbished observation deck for a spectacular view of the surrounding islands. Arriving in Oban, we took time to explore this quaint township, visiting the Jade carving centre and the recently refurbished Stewart Island museum.
It was then a short Zodiac ride back to the comforts of Heritage Adventurer, where we enjoyed the Captain’s Cocktails and had a chance to meet some of the fabulous team looking after us on our voyage.
