Exploring Paradise 2˚ South of the Equator at Derimbat Village

Derimbat Village, PNG, E Bell

Today, we had the privilege of discovering Derimbat Village, a hidden paradise in Melanesia on Manus Island, the largest within the Admiralty Island archipelago. Handcrafted dugout canoes paddled out to meet Heritage Adventurer and floated gracefully in the calm harbour, setting the scene for an unforgettable day.

Upon stepping ashore, we were greeted by a vibrant traditional dance group, their colourful attire enhancing the tropical charm. The air was thick with humidity, carrying the fragrant scents of fresh herbs and flowers that filled the village. A leisurely stroll along the foreshore revealed traditional houses and pig pens against a backdrop of swaying palm trees, just 2˚˚˚  south of the Equator!

The cheerful good morning greeting echoed through the village, and beneath the massive shade tree, young dancers showcased their culture through lively performances with garamuts (slit drums) and the energetic 'hey hey' dance. The friendly locals invited us to explore the lush forest behind the village, sharing the art of sago making and the secrets of their gardens. This magical experience offering a window into their world.

Our morning ended with a refreshing snorkelling session in the crystal-clear waters. As we bid farewell to Derimbat Village, I couldn't help but reflect on the beauty of this place and the warmth of its people.
