Exploring and Experiencing the Heart of Bougainville Island

Today, we embarked on an adventure deep into Bougainville Island's heart, where imposing mountains dramatically met the vast ocean. Our journey led us to Panguna, where a once-thriving open-pit mine filled with copper, silver, and gold was established back in 1969. But history tells a different tale, one of conflict and closure in 1989. In 2005, Bougainville regained autonomy, and today we had the privilege to explore this historic place, engaging with locals and hearing their stories from challenging times. The day brought cooler air and lush rainforests, a delight for birdwatchers among us.

After lunch we ventured to the bustling Arawa markets, where we spent the last of our local currency. It was a delightful immersion into the vibrant local culture. As the day drew to a close, we gathered on the shores for a heartfelt farewell sing-sing. The sounds of Rhythm Yard and Auaumaring Bands filled the air, their melodies inspired by a recent musical festival in Vanuatu. Folk, country, and contemporary tunes resonated, accompanied by guitars, kundu drums, pipe bands, and traditional dancers adorned in grass skirts and colourful fans. They moved in unison, kicking up their heels and sand, akin to a joyful line dance. It was a fitting farewell to Papua New Guinea as we prepared to continue our voyage, setting our course for the enchanting Solomon Islands.
