Cruising Antipodes Islands Soaring Cliffs

Antipodes Island Zodiac Cruise K.Riedel

Today we visited the rocky wildlife haven that is the Antipodes Islands archipelago. The largest of the seven islands, Antipodes Island measures 5-kilometres across and is covered with dense grassland.

A Zodiac cruise of its impressive south coast revealed the dramatic sight of towering sea cliffs rising out of the striking cobalt water. Being in the Zodiacs also offered a great opportunity to view Rockhopper and Erect-crested Penguins close up as they leapt out of the water and scrabbled up the steep rock.

Later we enjoyed a circumnavigation of the Antipodes Islands aboard Spirit of Enderby which offered grand views of the cliffs and remnants of volcanic cones from her decks as Antipodean Albatross soared in the sky above.
