A Christmas to Remember on Enderby Island

A Christmas to Remember on Enderby Island

Waking early anchored off Enderby Island in the Auckland Islands, we enjoyed a hearty Christmas breakfast before Zodiac cruising ashore at Sandy Bay to explore this remarkable Subantarctic Island.

Splitting in to two groups our long walkers set off to tackle a hike around the eastern end of the island while our short walkers explored the boardwalk and expansive fields of megaherbs. Meeting back at Sandy Beach, both groups were beaming as they exchanged stories of their encounters with lazing New Zealand Fur Seals and Sealions, endemic Auckland Island Snipe, Teal, Pipit, Tomtit and Shag, Tui, Bellbird, Yellow-eyed Penguins/Hoiho and numerous Parakeets in the flowering Rata trees as several New Zealand/Hooker's Sealion pups were born on the beach in front of us as beachmasters held court and Giant Petrel and Skua competed for the afterbirth.

Back in the Zodiacs we cruised along the basalt cliffs observing the nesting Shags and Yellow-eyed Penguins before returning to Spirit of Enderby for celebratory Christmas drinks and special feast prepared by our talented chefs.
